History repeats itself. Historians repeat each other.

About This Quote

History repeats itself. Historians repeat each other. This saying has the correct explanation of the notion that history repeats itself. The origin of this saying is unknown, but it is widely attributed to the Roman historian Suetonius, who wrote in his book “The Lives of the Caesars” about Julius Caesar repeating Alexander the Great’s conquests.

“History repeats itself,” according to Suetonius, summed up Caesar’s reign and illustrated his methods and tactics as he conquered every land he went to: “He was like a force of nature; nothing could withstand him, and no one could anticipate his moves. He was always at the head of an army; his death left Rome leaderless and as if bereft of order.”
